The "Super Tangent" Is Super Ridiculous

Super Tangent 1

Super Tangent Details
Okay, so, I had to pull copies of the photos down from the LUX PRO web site and post them here before Apple's legal department shuts their site down.

Even though it's a rip-off of the iPod Shuffle, it does have some nice features the Shuffle would benefit from in some eyes: a voice recorder and an FM tuner.

An Analysis of Candy Wrapper Design

Butterfinger

From the site:
The purpose of this analysis was to gain a broad understanding of the design process of packaging in the confections (specifically candy bar) category. The aim was to, first, take an historical look at the development of the product category. Then, through the study of graphic design trends related to the product, understand what sociocultural, technical, and manufacturing events triggered such trends.

Visit the site.
Download the study as a PDF.

Two Points: Cheerleader Toss

Cheerleader Toss

This has got to be staged. The camera work is too "directed". Plus, this has corporate sponsorship written all over it. However, my wife says the girl has GREAT form. Wonderful.

Fragile Machine

Fragile Machine

Fragile Machine looks like a stunningly BEAUTIFUL film.

From the site...
Presenting the debut film by renowned art and music studio Aoineko. Fragile Machine is an underground cg film about science, religion, and man's role in a new nature of which he has partial authorship.

Through a unique combination of animation and music which some have likened to an 'electronic operetta' it tells the story of the first girl to be built in a factory instead of born from a womb.

The questions abound regarding her creation. Why was she made? Does she have a soul? Where would she go if she died? These and other questions are all examined in a fractured and experimental way.

"Copyright Criminals"

Copyright Criminals

This is a great documentary by Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod about the rights to sample in hip hop. It features the likes of Pete Rock, Qbert, Saul Williams and a number of other artists and scholars who share the same affection and passion for the proper use of sampling in music.

UN's Land Mine Commercial is a Bomb

Stop Land Mines

I understand the importance of erradicating land mines around the world, however, the UN's awarenss campaign (pardon the pun) undermines their goal. Their execution clouds their point too much for the American Public.

Some people might even think the commercial is some sort of sick comedy sketch with a really bad ending.

Santa Coke

Coca-Cola

Bah humbug. I was taught a while back that Santa wore red b/c of a marketing decision by Coca-Cola. But according to this site, the modern image of Santa Claus wasn't created by Coca-Cola after all.

New Twist on a Taking a Fast Crap

Toto NEOREST 300

From the article:
For most people, toilets are a private perch, a place for quiet contemplation. But not for plumbing researchers. Their job demands that they dream of toilets that never were and ask, "Why not?" Lately they've been pushing hard. Ever since regulators clamped down on the volume of water allowed per flush, more users have reported clogs. New low-flow toilets, great in theory, just aren't cutting it. Independent testers, frustrated by the industry's lackadaisical response to these problems, have started to apply the same kind of pressure to toilet makers that JD Power did to car companies in the 1980s. The result: Manufacturers have begun using computer models and sophisticated math to create toilets that flush cleaner, faster, quieter, and more efficiently.

In the wired.com article, researcher Ashish Kulkani searches for the best combination of power and conservation when it comes to the commode. To test his bowls he uses oatmeal, golf balls and 4-inch vinyl tubes he calls water wigglers. Unlike golf balls, the wigglers float.

Project Implicit

Project Implicit

Take an online test at Project Implicit to discover some hidden biases in your decision-making. I originally saw this on a Scientfic American Frontiers episode titled "HIdden Motives".

One segment of the show covered Project Implicit's work.

From the Scientific American Frontiers site:
In the Harvard lab of Mahzarin Banaji, Alan takes a test designed to ferret out our unconscious prejudices. Called the Implicit Association Test (and available on the web), it measures the strength of associations we make without being aware of them between such things as men and career as compared with women and career. Alan, despite many years of working in feminist causes, still harbors a slight prejudice against associating women with a career. But the real surprise is that Mahzarin herself, despite a very successful career as a Harvard professor, shows a strong implicit bias against women in the workplace.
