My New AIM Robot: SmarterChild

SmarterChild

So, my friend Will asked me if I read about SmarterChild in the current issue of Wired. I said no. He says quite simply, "Add him to your buddy list."

I did and this is SmarterChild's response:

"How are you?
Hi
(my AIM screen name), I'm SmarterChild!

I'm your new robot friend. I bring you the info you want faster and easier than ever! Click here to see my privacy policy.

During the course of our conversations you may see sponsored messages. These messages have the word "sponsorship" at the end. Sponsors help me remain free of cost to you! To learn more about sponsored messages, click here.

I can't wait to show you what I can do, but first I'd like get to know you a little.

May I ask you a few general questions? (To do this later, type "skip." You can also skip any question.)

Basically, SmarterChild is an AIM robot that can retrieve basic information for you. For example:

Here are the things you can do:

1 Get info such as news, weather and movies
2 Visit my library including Shakespeare, U.S. presidents and a thesaurus
3 Have fun with manicdotes, horoscopes, 4-in-a-row and more
4 Use tools like conversions, calculator and dictionary
5 Join in - tell me about a crush, find out how many people are IMing me, create a poll and more
6 See what's new - I've got something new to tell you about now!

You can make your window bigger and scroll down to read better.

Next time you want to see this menu, just type "home."

I asked who won the Knicks game, it gave me a quick synopsis. I asked when it will snow again in my area and it gave me the 5-day forecast for the NYC area.

It asks a few basic questions up front -- demographics/psychographics and such. Of course, with those answers, you get the targeted sponsored links.

Link Game

Here's a surprisingly addictive game called Grid (I've also seen it called Grid Game.).

From the site: The objective of the game is to get a chain reaction of tiles as long as possible. Tiles will start each other if their lines are connected. Click on a tile to start.

My high score was 1208. I dunno -- what's the best strategy?

Update: I got a new high score of 2023. Hey, it's Sunday morning with no football on today, okay?!?!?!?

Insanely Great: Over Two Decades Later

1984 Macintosh Introduction

It's funny to look back at the original introduction of the Macintosh back in 1984 and realize just how simple computers were before its introduction.

The crowd was hooting and hollering at the word "Macintosh" scrolling across the screen. And Steve Jobs, the born showman he is, made a point to be obvious about plugging in something called a "mouse."

It's the Size of Long Island and It Made a Hard Landing

From the newswires...

NASA satellites shows the sea ice adjacent to the B-15a iceberg breaking up quickly while the iceberg remains intact. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua satellites shows hundreds of cracks in the sea ice near the Drygalski Ice Tongue. Scientists expected the berg to hit the Ice Tongue over the weekend, instead it appears to have grounded on a submarine shoal when it was just 2.5 miles from the tongue. Warmer temperatures and possible shifts in ocean currents are probably responsible for the break up of the sea ice nearest the iceberg.

European VW Ad That Surely Won't Air
on U.S. Television

I'm usually pretty open about controversial ads from overseas, but this one really gives me the creeps.

I was able to download it from the orginal site but I'm really not too sure if some conservative group will make them take it down. You never know nowadays.

Pentagon: "Do You Want to Shag Now
or Shag During Battle?"

15 January 2005 -- From New Scientist Print Edition. -- The Pentagon considered developing a host of non-lethal chemical weapons that would disrupt discipline and morale among enemy troops, newly declassified documents reveal.

Most bizarre among the plans was one for the development of an "aphrodisiac" chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers sexually irresistible to each other. Provoking widespread homosexual behaviour among troops would cause a "distasteful but completely non-lethal" blow to morale, the proposal says.

Guess the Dictator/TV Sit-Com Character

Here are the rules: Pretend to be a dictator or television sitcom character. The web site will try to guess who you are by asking simple yes/no questions. If you're not sure of the answer to a question, answer "No". If you forgot who you were pretending to be, go take a nap, you're obviously under too much stress. Also, drink plenty of fluids.

To begin playing, click here.

CAUTION: this game can be addicting if you either have a Ph.D in history or if you watch more than your share of television sit-coms.
